Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
Quartz-sandstone pillars that look like an unfinished ink painting when the mist lifts.
What to see
Yuanjiajie is the core. Early morning, before the mist lifts, is when it looks most like a painting. Jinbianxi suits anyone who wants an easy walk: flat the whole way, and two hours along the stream covers the main stretch. Tianzishan has wider views but more tour groups — go early.
How to plan
- Two days: day one Yuanjiajie and Yangjiajie, day two Jinbianxi and the Shili Gallery.
- Three days: add Tianzishan and stay on the mountain for sunset.
- Accommodation on the mountain is basic. For comfort, stay in Wulingyuan and take the shuttle in.
Worth knowing
In high season (July–August, National Day) the cable-car queue can be an hour. Stone steps are slippery after rain — wear soles with grip. The ticket is valid for four days; don’t cram everything into one.
